Hallooooooo…It’s my first post here!!! haha…Thanks Heindy, for setting up this blog! We can really keep each other updated through this blog.
Anyway, let’s talk about my work…I’m currently working at Squire Mech Pte Ltd, a Mechanical & Electrical engineering consulting company in building industry. When i went for the interview with this company, the interviewer told me an analogy regarding building industry. A building is basically like a human being. The body, consisting of bones, is similar to the structure of the building, which civil and structural engineers are responsible for. The facade designer is the one who is responsible to beautify the building, in a way similar to how we beautify ourselves with clothes and accessories. After having the building up on the ground, you need services to run through it. Similarly, your veins and blood circulation will come into picture. You cant be possibly be staying in an empty building, with no water and no electricity. This is where my company comes into picture. We provide consulting services for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services which are to be incorporated into any building. These include water distribution system, sanitation, electrical distribution system, fire protection system, Air-con and mechanical ventilation, and vertical transportation system (e.g. lifts, escalators). So, we provide the veins and the blood of the building, sounds interesting huh? haha…
Honestly, the work is pretty challenging. I did not study building services in particular, when i was in University. So, i’m literally studying at work everyday and yet still earn money from learning, haha…Currently, I have been assigned to 5 projects at work: two condominiums (private apartments) in Singapore, International Financial Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Village Centre in Dubai, and Bioreactor Plant in Singapore. The projects in building industry usually covers a span of at least 2 years to more than 5 years. Most of the projects that i have been assigned to are still in the design stage, so the buildings are not up yet and i will only get to see it materialize in few years time.
The beauty of working in consulting industry is that you get to meet different people, from the authority, the client, the architect, the structural engineers, the quantity surveyors, the contractors, the suppliers, and many more who are directly or indirectly involved in the development of a building. However, that means you need to adapt to many different working styles, so as to achieve the most optimum performance.
Even after 1.5 months working, I’m still pretty blur at work. I’m learning a lot every day, from the basic of building services, to the standard Singapore codes and regulations which i have to abide by in designing of the services in any building. My dad is the best consultant, which i can always turn to, everytime i encounter any difficulties at work, since he has background in construction.
Ok, i shall continue my post next time…gotta do housework first, hehe!!!
Take care everyone
