So, I remembered watching Will Smith in his movie, i-Robot, and thought it was really cool that he could talk to his car and it would drive itself. Well, obviously this kind of concept of car doesn’t only exist in that particular movie alone. There has been other movies that portray the idea to have a car that drives itself. And, not until last Saturday I found an article about the particular technology that is being developed. Yes, it is out there, and the dream to have a car that drives for you will soon come.
Of course the project is still under development and it will take years for the technology to be ready. But at least it becomes exciting to actually to see this idea come alive. The company that is developing this technology is no other company but Google. I’m not sure what Google’s strategy is in entering automobile industry in terms of providing the technology or softwares, but Google did it again to blow everybody mind.
According to the article, it is using artificial-intelligence softwares that can sense anything near by the car. It is hoped to reduce errors in driving and the number of people died in car accidents that has mounted up to 37,000 in 2008 in the United States alone. It was already tested on 1,000 miles (without human interventions) and 140,000 (with occasional human control).
I believe Google is not the only company out there that have worked on this concept. I also remembered watching a Japanese company that already had the same idea. Well, we already have cars that park itself.
Obviously this technology would be one of the greatest inventions though it will not necessarily eliminate humans as the driver. So one still needs to learn how to drive.
