Black Friday Experience
Wikipedia describes Black Friday as “the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season… many employees take the day off, which increases the number of potential shoppers”.
To me Black Friday can result in two outcomes: the day where one is filled with joy and happiness (for prices are going to drop on that day), and the day where one spends more than what he usually does.
To decide which outcome is more to your fitting, it is entirely up to you. For my family and I, we are definitely going to be filled with joy and happiness and spend ‘a little’ bit more than what we usually do.
Our targets have been decided since 6 o’clock Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008; Wal-Mart (sad, huh?), Target, GameStop, CompUSA and The Parks at Arlington.
We have never been to any early bird sale before and this year we are going to try it out. Wake up at 4 o’clock; get ready; and go to our destinations starting from Wal-Mart first at 4:30 in the morning. We are definitely excited but also nervous if the products that we want to get have already been sold out.
Well, this time, I want to hear anything from you guys. Give us comments on this article; please do not write us emails. Anything that you want to tell about your previous Black Friday experiences, or if you haven’t had any experience about it maybe you can share what your plans are for this big day. And heck, if you don’t even know what Black Friday is just join in the conversation. We would like to know your opinions.
Thanks y’all. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Shopping from Tjia Family.

News from Singapore!!!
Hallooooooo…It’s my first post here!!! haha…Thanks Heindy, for setting up this blog! We can really keep each other updated through this blog.
Anyway, let’s talk about my work…I’m currently working at Squire Mech Pte Ltd, a Mechanical & Electrical engineering consulting company in building industry. When i went for the interview with this company, the interviewer told me an analogy regarding building industry. A building is basically like a human being. The body, consisting of bones, is similar to the structure of the building, which civil and structural engineers are responsible for. The facade designer is the one who is responsible to beautify the building, in a way similar to how we beautify ourselves with clothes and accessories. After having the building up on the ground, you need services to run through it. Similarly, your veins and blood circulation will come into picture. You cant be possibly be staying in an empty building, with no water and no electricity. This is where my company comes into picture. We provide consulting services for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services which are to be incorporated into any building. These include water distribution system, sanitation, electrical distribution system, fire protection system, Air-con and mechanical ventilation, and vertical transportation system (e.g. lifts, escalators). So, we provide the veins and the blood of the building, sounds interesting huh? haha…
Honestly, the work is pretty challenging. I did not study building services in particular, when i was in University. So, i’m literally studying at work everyday and yet still earn money from learning, haha…Currently, I have been assigned to 5 projects at work: two condominiums (private apartments) in Singapore, International Financial Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Village Centre in Dubai, and Bioreactor Plant in Singapore. The projects in building industry usually covers a span of at least 2 years to more than 5 years. Most of the projects that i have been assigned to are still in the design stage, so the buildings are not up yet and i will only get to see it materialize in few years time.
The beauty of working in consulting industry is that you get to meet different people, from the authority, the client, the architect, the structural engineers, the quantity surveyors, the contractors, the suppliers, and many more who are directly or indirectly involved in the development of a building. However, that means you need to adapt to many different working styles, so as to achieve the most optimum performance.
Even after 1.5 months working, I’m still pretty blur at work. I’m learning a lot every day, from the basic of building services, to the standard Singapore codes and regulations which i have to abide by in designing of the services in any building. My dad is the best consultant, which i can always turn to, everytime i encounter any difficulties at work, since he has background in construction.
Ok, i shall continue my post next time…gotta do housework first, hehe!!!
Take care everyone
Texas Made a History after Ike
On Sunday, September 14, 2008, Texas made a new history for it’s biggest rescue effort after Hurricane Ike. As the search team looked through the flooded houses and destructions caused by the storm, nearly 2,000 people reported have been rescued. At least 21 deaths were found in the City of Galveston and some outside of Texas. Not only that, it caused the electricity in the city went off, no gas, and some serious damages that is predicted might last for a month or more.
It’s said to be the biggest rescue effort in Texas history since it used massive groups of people, including more than 50 helicopters, to rescue the victims. President Bush has planned his visit to the places hit by the hurricane. He also planned to give supports to rebuild again things destroyed and people hurt from the hit.
Another impact from hurricane Ike is that it might affect oil prices again. Before it hit the city of Galveston, it has hit first and left damages for some offshore oil production facilities that might cause the oil prices to go up again for the next several weeks.
There are more discoveries, either good or bad news, coming about the destructions of the hurricane. I would like to invite all of us through this website to pray or to express your sympathy to our friends and relatives who might have gotten affected by the hurricane.
Stanly Palit’s Birthday
This is a special day for Stanly Palit because today is his birthday.
Since today all of us were busy working and studying, we had the party yesterday in Olive Garden. We had a lot of fun and “57%” in the restaurant.
None of us took any picture; but since a picture speaks a thousand words, I believe a video speaks 10 thousands more. Visit my YouTube playlist by clicking here to view Stanly B-day’s videos.
Finally, let’s all say Happy Birthday to Stanly Palit for his 22nd year in life. May God bless him in this new year and may he show more and more Christ-like characters to his friends, family, and surroundings.
Aku dan Dirimu
Thought I could share this video with you guys.
A Trip From Houston
It has been a long time for me to post in Tjia Family’s Blog. Lately I have been busy with work and other stuff especially since my cousin, Dessya Palit, and my aunt, Tjia Bie An, came to Texas last week.
We had planned to go to Houston to celebrate Indonesia’s 63rd anniversary for the Indonesian Declaration Day. On August 23rd, all of us (Ci Christa, Ko Stanly, De Dessya, I Fong, and me) traveled to Houston to celebrate the anniversary with our cousin, Koko Luky, with the rest of the Indonesians in there.
As we walked in to the bazaar there were lots of booths selling foods, jewelries, batiks, and other items from Indonesia. We immediately went to the booths that sell es cendol, martabak, rendang, bakmi, empe-empe and sate.
It felt like home again. The crowd, faces, people shouting here and there to sell their stuff. What I really like the most is that the fact that my family was there and all of us enjoyed the trip.
Unfortunately though we didn’t take any pictures when we were in the bazaar. Although we took some other pictures in the Forbidden Garden. Check them out!
A 5-hour drive from Keene to Houston is really worth it for the gathering of family, and fun that we all had.

Graduation Delight

We would like to congratulate our dearest cousin in Singapore, Lydia Makmur, for finishing her degree in Mechanical Engineering in National University of Singapore.
Just like what Joanna Fuchs says in her poem: ..though your graduation’s done, your whole life’s an education; that has only just begun.
Congratulation again.
